DOUBLE FOR DEMPSEY

DOUBLE FOR DEMPSEY
Saturday 30th October 2010 (Premier League)
Fulham 2 (Dempsey 30, 44) Wigan Athletic 0
Attendance: 25,448
Unlike the Manchester United, Everton and Tottenham games, I was assigned to the neutral section of the Putney End, so most of the supporters were Fulham fans. Unlike the away part of the end, there were a lot more foreign fans seated there, so quite a few beer-toting supporters had to be turned back at the entrance to the vomitory.

The game was a fairly routine victory for Fulham in front of a large crowd, considering the quality and stature of the visitors. Other than Clint Dempsey’s brace, the only other moment of note was the return of Andy Johnson after a long absence through injury.

As for next week’s game against Aston Villa, I’ll have to miss that one as I’m going to watch Shrewsbury Town play Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium in the first round of the F.A. Cup.

The “Fan-Clapper,” above, was placed on every seat before this game as part of a campaign to kick out racism from football. Stewards were also asked to sport a sticker on their coats expressing the same sentiment.                                                                                          © Stephen Taylor
